Chicago Sun-Times.com, August 2006

Rose petals punctuate a pedicure for patron Desiree Banks at Spa Space. After exfoliation comes a massage with rose oil. (John J. Kim/Sun-Times)

WINE AND ROSES, ANYONE?

The place: Spa Space, 161 N. Canal, (312) 466-9585

The setting: This urban oasis, which is decked in serene blues and greens, leads clients through a long, windowed hall lined with bamboo stalks and a stone garden. A choice of two settings is available for pedicures, including an open area featuring leather saddle chairs and a bamboo wood-accented tub. This area can be sectioned off with semi-sheer chocolate curtains. There's also a private pedicure suite for two.

The service: The Wine & Roses pedicure begins with a footbath loaded with oil-laced rose fizz. Next, an antioxidant-rich grape seed scrub exfoliates the skin before the filing, trimming and buffing begin. As a follow-up, you'll enjoy a massage with rose oil. All the while, you can sip a glass of vino.

What makes it decadent: "This is about serious pampering," says owner Natalie Tessler. "It takes 20,000 rose petals just to make 1 ounce of oil. And the oil itself is incredibly hydrating."

The cost: $60

How to continue the benefits at home: "Follow up with a rich, hydrating lotion -- ideally one with rose oil or shea butter -- as soon as you get out of the shower," Tessler says. "And put a coat of clear polish on the day after your pedicure."

First impressions: Um, excuse me? I'm scheduled for an appointment at Mens Space. But that awning near the front door says Spa Space. In fact, the sign here at the reception desk says Spa Space. Wait a minute . . . this is Spa Space! OK, so "Mens Space"...

In January, 2004, the editors of Citysearch.com selected Spa Space as the #1 Best Spa in Chicago.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MSN.com picks Spa Space's "Deep Space for Men" Service Package as one of the ten best spa services for men in the United States.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Allure Magazine - Best Body Treatment in Chicago
Allure's annual "Best of Beauty" issue named Spa Space's renowned Pineapple Papaya Pacific Paradise as the best body treatment in Chicago, promising results of silky-smooth skin.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shape Magazine - Nationwide search for best facials
"We've scoured the country for these superior skin-care spas and their most effective facials" - Shape selects the Vitamin C Booster Facial at Spa Space as the best facial for dull and sun-damaged skin.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Where the Stars Go" to find facials....InStyle names Spa Space.
"I wanted to combine the clinical feeling of being in a doctor's office with a nurturing environment," says owner Natalie Tessler (her dermatologist dad is an advisor). Aestheticians exfoliate skin to prepare it for extractions, then administer a customized facial. Microdermabrasion is popular with VIPs, as is the Epicuren facial, which features a skin-nourishing protein mask. - InStyle

Chicago Tribune - Favorite spas for facials
I love this spa! I'd never heard of SpaSpace until I received a gift certificate, so I wasn't expecting much. But I was very pleasantly surprised! The space is beautiful and relaxing. Every service I've had (I've been back many times on my own dime) has been wonderful. Consistently outstanding and friendly service. The best facials I've ever had. I highly recommend Spa Space!" -- M. P.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Magazine - The Best of Chicago "
At Spa Space, busy Loop lawyers, traders, and business execs can carve a little time out from their hectic schedules to focus on what matters most: golf. The spa's one-hour golf massage ($90) uses trigger point therapy and deep-tissue massage to target the major muscle groups used in a golf swing; the facility also offers other kinds of massages and a full range of beauty treatments, as well as lunches from the nearby restaurant Nine."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lucky Magazine
"The Loop is the last place you'd expect to find sanctuary, but that's just what Spa Space delivers, just blocks from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. The brainchild of former lawyer Natalie Tessler, Spa Space offers such signature treatments as Fizzy Finger Soaks with lavender, mango or rose oil during manicures; and pedicures performed in a massaging, reclining lounge chair."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elle Magazine
In an article on "unlikely beauty entrepreneurs" around the world, Elle features lawyer-turned-spa owner Natalie Tessler: "Tessler more than hit the mark with Spa Space, located in...Chicago's West Loop. Along with luxurious treatments like the exfoliating body wrap, Spa Space has a full menu of medically oriented services like glycolic peels and microdermabrasion. Every service gets a stamp of approval from a medical advisory board ...the acclaimed Detroit-based dermatologist Martin E. Tessler, MD (the name is no coincidence; he's Natalie's father), whose no-nonsense skin-care line, Vibraderm, is the secret ingredient in Spa Space's gentle facials."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Tribune - Men's Services
"Male grooming doesn't stop at nose hairs anymore! A self-described "spa-aholic," 42-year old Barry Moltz has had massages everywhere from Kenya to Canyon Ranch. I'm the one - not my wife - who wants to go on spa vacations," he said. Moltz runs Prairie Angel, a Chicago company that invests in startup businesses. His spa of choice, Spa Space at 161 N. Canal St., near the Mercantile Exchange and the Board of Trade, draws 42 percent of its clients from the male population with its unfussy decor and a separate men's waiting area and locker room. More than half of its massage clients are men." View our Men's Service Menu.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

W Magazine - What's Hot in Beauty
Spa Space was named as one of two spas nationwide: "Nothing is simple about this spa menu: Prenatal and golfer's massage are just two of the types available, along with many other innovative treatments."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maxim Magazine - Best of Chicago
Spa Space is the only spa mentioned in Maxim Magazine's Best of Chicago issue: "Spa Space has created the Golf Massage ($90) in which your poor, abused golf-swinging muscle groups are rubbed in all the right ways."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Shops
"Owner Natalie Tessler's father is a dermatologist, and his input at this skin-conscious spa includes the formation of a medical advisory board that helped develop treatments for both pleasure and efficacy. Hence, the tongue-twistingly delicious Pineapple Papaya Pacific Paradise body scrub and massage ($140)."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today's Chicago Woman - Spa Treats You'll Want to Eat
"It's rush hour in the Loop - traffic's at a standstill, horns are honking and sidewalks are overflowing with suits. Your daydream of a peaceful oasis is now a reality. Shoulder to shoulder with downtown office suites, theaters and office suites, Spa Space is a full-service contemporary spa that combines the serious side of pain management, massage therapy and a corrective approach to skin care with world-class luxury treatments. Once inside, you're surrounded by burning scented candles, flowers, thick velvet drapery, and nonlinear furniture and walkways. A juice bar takes center stage in the reception area, while the fully-stocked men's and women's locker rooms are a highlight of the remaining space. Each includes a relax room with comfy terry cloth-covered furniture and your choice of hot herbal tea or ice water flavored with slices of cucumber."

Featured treatment: "Wine and Roses Treatment Package"

The half-day package includes a grape seed body scrub, aromatherapy massage, facial, manicure and pedicure. Although each treatment can be purchased separately, together they create the ultimate day of pampering. The grapeseed body scrub represents the wine in "wine and roses." You'll walk into a treatment room named Earth, Sky, Heaven, Space or Water to find a table scattered with rose petals. The sloughing action of the nonabrasive anti-oxidant-rich grapeseed granules will make your skin glow. The scrub is removed with warm moist towels, a pleasure itself. It's followed by a Swedish massage with rose-infused oil. The scent not only lingers on your skin long after you leave, but it also fills the room, making you feel as if you're in a fully-blooming garden.

"Gratefully, the sensory experience isn't over yet. The same rose-infused oil is also added to the water you'll soak your feet in as the initiation to the pedicure, which is almost as relaxing as the massage. Awaiting you is the "pedicure throne" - a vibrating leather chair with a remote that lets you control the intensity level and target areas complete with an attached whirlpool. With only two thrones to a room, the treatment is the perfect stress-reducer. You're offered a glass of wine to sip as your feet and lower legs are exfoliated with grapeseed scrub and massaged with rose oil. The final touch, of course, is an expert polish. You'll find the experience soothing and incredibly romantic. It makes a perfect gift. Cost: $350.
